2009 Bursary Winners
The Murray Purcell Bursary Program
The Nova Scotia Golf Association is pleased to announce the 2009 Murray Purcell Bursary Award Recipients. The 2009 winners of the Murray Purcell Bursary Program originate from all regions of the province. This year the NSGA received 24 bursary applications from around Nova Scotia and 8 student golfers have been awarded a total of $15,000.00.
The NSGA Bursary program was created to help Nova Scotian Golfers with the increasing cost of post secondary education. This endowment program was renamed in 2007 in memory of the late Murray Purcell.
Mr. Purcell worked with the NSGA for over 15 years and was instrumental in creating many of the programs that exist today, including the bursary program.
Below are the 2009 Murray Purcell Bursary winners:
Jeffrey Thompson $3000.00
The top bursary of $3000.00 is awarded to Jeffrey Thompson of New Glasgow. Mr. Thompson is a member of the Glen Lovat Golf Club. Jeffrey graduated from the North Nova Education Centre and is entering his third year at St. Francis Xavier University where he is studying Physics.
Xavier Foley $2500.00
Xavier Foley of Eagle Crest Golf Course is the next recipient of the Murray Purcell Bursary. Xavier has just completed his grade 12 at Northeast Kings Educational Centre and will be taking his Bachelor of Business Administration at St. Francis Xavier University this year.
Mark Canfield $2000.00
Malagash native Mark Canfield, who is a member of the Northumberland Links Golf Club, has received a bursary in the amount $2000.00. Mark is a recent graduate of the Pugwash District High School and will be attending the Nova Scotia Agricultural College this fall.
Marc-Andre d’Entremont $1500.00
Marc-Andre d’Entremont is a member of the Clare Golf Club.Marc-Andre will be attending the Université Sainte-Anne in September where he will be working towards his Health Science Diplômé.
Kevin Conrad $1500.00
Kevin Conrad of the Hartlen Point Golf Club recently graduated from Dartmouth High School. He will be attending Dalhousie University in the fall where he will be studying Chemical Engineering.
Olivia Thomas $1500.00
Olivia Thomas is a member of the Oakfield Golf Club and a graduate of Lockview High School. Olivia will be attending the University of Kings College this fall and will be working towards her English Degree.
John “Cole” MacIsaac $1500.00
Cole MacIsaac from Dartmouth is a member of both the Parrsboro and Hartlen Point Forces Golf Clubs. Cole graduated from Prince Andrew High School and will be attending Dalhousie University and will be working towards
his Bachelor of Community Design.
James Laing $1500.00
James Laing is a member of the Ashburn Golf Club and a graduate of Halifax West High School. James has completed his first year of study at Bishop’s University in Quebec where he is working towards his Bachelor of Business Administration.
